BREAKING: Sinema gives emphatic defense of filibuster in big blow to Dems seeking to eliminate it

In a major blow to Democrats hoping to eliminate the filibuster, Democrat Arizona Krysten Sinema defended it, arguing it “protects the democracy of our nation.”

Sinema told reporters Tuesday “As folks in Arizona know, I’ve long been a supporter of the filibuster because it is a tool that protects the democracy of our nation, rather than allowing our country to ricochet wildly every two to four years back and forth between policies.”

“The idea of the filibuster was created by those who came before us in the United States Senate to create comity and to encourage senators to find bipartisanship and work together,” she continued “and while there are some that do not believe bipartisanship is possible, I think I’m a daily example that bipartisanship is possible. So to those who say that we must make a choice between the filibuster and ‘X,’ I say, this is a false choice.”

“The reality is that when you have a system that is not working effectively — and I would think that most would agree that the Senate is not a particularly well-oiled machine, right? The way to fix that is to fix your behavior, not to eliminate the rules or change the rules, but to change the behavior,” she added.

“I’m going to continue to go to work every day aggressively seeking bipartisanship in a cheerful, happy warrior way as I always do and showing that when we work together we can get things done,” Sinema concluded.

During a speech in Oklahoma Tuesday, Biden lamented the lack of support for his agenda from moderate Democrats Joe Manchin and Krysten Sinema .

“I hear all the folks on [TV] saying, ‘Why doesn’t Biden get this done?’” said while speaking in Tulsa “Well, because Biden only has a majority of effectively four votes in the House and a tie in the Senate, with two members of the Senate who vote more with my Republican friends.”

Per Yahoo News “Biden seemed to be alluding to a federal proposal that would, among other things, expand mail-in and early voting and require automatic voter registration. The bill passed the House in March and comes while several restrictive, Republican-backed voting bills have been proposed or passed at the state level.”

“Sinema and Manchin have been criticized for breaking with progressives on key issues, such as potentially eliminating the filibuster. However, political observers were quick to note that while the two moderates have become roadblocks when it comes to some Democratic priorities, it’s not true that they “vote more with Republicans”: According to FiveThirtyEight, Sinema and Manchin have voted with the White House 100 percent of the time since Biden’s inauguration,” the report adds.
