Joe Biden has experiences a serious border crisis at the beginning of the term, and a team of Democrats and Republicans are finally taking some action.
Biden tapped Kamala Harris to take point on fixing the root causes of the problem, but in her first month as “border czar” she has made a few phone calls, but no trip to the border, nor any press conferences.
His administration has announced no new policies to officially combat the surge going on. It’s as if they are fine with the situation, despite the legitimate concerns and abuses going on.
But finally a bi-partisan group has taken action to deal with the crisis. From Fox News:
A bipartisan bill aimed at blunting the southern border crisis will reportedly be introduced Thursday by Sens. John Cornyn, R-Texas, and Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz.
The bill would address the Biden administration’s ability to handle the surge of migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border, attempt to streamline migrant asylum claims in a “timely” manner and deter those unlikely to be approved and also “protect unaccompanied migrant children,” according to The Hill.
Well, thank goodness someone is finally doing something about the chaos down South.
If this only came from Republicans, it would be completely ignored by Biden and the Democrats, but hopefully the co-sponsorship by Democrat Kyrsten Sinema will help get things done.
Unfortuntely, like Joe Manchin, Sinema has been on the outs with her own party lately for refusing to blow up the filibuster. But she has been going along with them on most liberal votes.
Most of the time Republicans are more than happy when the government gets nothing done—but now, with this border problem, is not one of those times.
The safety of the American people is at stake. And the health and safety of the people trying to cross the border is in jeopardy too, likely because Biden signaled he wouldn’t turn them away.
So the government is spending over $80 million every week just to house these people, and they’re being forced to shut down some facilities where abuses have been found.
This is unacceptable in America, so thank goodness Cornyn and Sinema are working together to finally get something done.
Hopefully Democrats start paying attention to what real bipartisanship looks like. It actually helps the American people instead of just securing power for one party or redistributing wealth.
It’s unlikely, but at least we might finally see the border get under control—just like it was in the final two years of Trump’s term.
