New information about the November 2016 meeting between Barack Obama and Donald Trump has surfaced.
The Atlantic staff writer Edward Issac-Dovere reported in an excerpt from the new book “Battle for the Soul: Inside the Democrats’ Campaigns to Defeat Trump” obtained by Insider that Obama tried “buttering up” Trump in order to convince him not to ruin certain crucial aspects of his legacy.
Obama was particularly desperate to keep the Iran Nuclear Deal alive, which Trump had promised to abandon during his 2016 campaign. In an attempt to cater to Trump’s ego, he also suggested renaming it the “Trump Anti-Nuclear Deal.”
“While they were sitting there, Obama thought the strategy was working,” Dovere wrote. “Obama encouraged the reopening of Cuba when Trump mentioned the business opportunity for new hotels. He’d bombarded him with information about the Iran agreement, walking him through the conditions… Obama proposed renaming it the Trump Anti-Nuclear Deal. Make some tweaks to Obamacare and rename it Trumpcare.”
Unfortunately for Obama, his efforts were in vain, and Trump ended up withdrawing the United States from the agreement anyway. Trump later invited Obama to join him in Florida after assuming the presidency.
“At one point, Trump inquired about how he planned to spend his time after leaving office,” Dovere wrote.
When Trump took office, their relationship quickly deteriorated, and there is definitely no love lost between them now. Obama ran a strong campaign against Trump last year, claiming that his administration “exceeded” his worst fears.

“There is no doubt that if we had only taken those measures, we would have saved some lives and, ironically, the economy would be better,” Obama told late-night host Stephen Colbert. “Some of the things you’re seeing are unbelievable. And it is to the country’s disadvantage. However, as you said. If the Republicans decided to keep the White House, it would have been good politics to do so.”
